Named after Etienne de Silhouette, a prominent 18th-century French Controller General of Finances, it’s one of the richest biodiversity points in the western Indian Ocean with many native and rare plant and animal species. In 1987, the surrounding waters were declared a Marine National Park, followed by the creation of Silhouette National Park in 2010, which protects 93% of the island’s landmass.
